Charlie O’Brien is a presenter, journalist and Heart radio Breakfast Show host.
Charlie has co-hosted the Breakfast Show in Kent with James Heming since January 2011. Since joining the show, Heart Kent has enjoyed some of its best listening figures in five years.
After getting a First Class Degree in Communications from Leicester University, Charlie went on to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the prestigious City University, London.
Work experience placements at The Guardian, Red Magazine, Virgin Radio, Capital Radio and ITV then led to Charlie starting her career as a freelance journalist with Time FM, Sky/Five News and ITN.
Charlie then landed her first staff role as reporter and newsreader at Invicta FM & Gold in Kent.
In just two years Charlie climbed the ranks to the position of News Editor – making her one of the youngest in the whole radio group. Charlie was put in charge of helping over-see the transition of Invicta FM to Heart Radio, as part of the Global Radio network.
Just a year later Charlie was promoted to Regional News Editor in Brighton – looking after the news output for Kent, Sussex and Surrey. During this time Charlie also read news and reported all over the Global network – for Heart, Classic FM and LBC Radio. In this time Charlie also won ‘Radio Journalist of the Year’ at the EDF Energy awards. (2010)
Charlie spent 6 months developing the huge news patch before getting the call to co-host Heart Breakfast in Kent with James Heming in January 2011.
Alongside her hectic job of waking up Kent five days a week – Charlie writes a regular column as well as lifestyle and beauty features for InsideKent magazine, in addition to her Heart FM show blog. She has also hosted many live events including The Wanted at Live at the Castle, The Sugababes and James Morrison, as well as numerous Race for Life events, and Christmas light switch-ons.
Charlie prides herself with being up to date with all the latest showbiz gossip and has interviewed some of the hottest celebs and music stars out there including Olly Murs, JLS, The Wanted, Alexandra Burke, Ant n Dec, Sir Bob Geldof, Robin Gibb and many, many more.
In April 2012 Charlie was nominated for a prestigious Sony award as part of Heart Breakfast with James and Charlie.
Charlie is also as much a natural in front of the camera as she is behind the mic. As well as regularly fronting videos for Heart, Charlie is a walk on presenter for corporate websites, with many clients requesting her specifically. Charlie also reports from the red carpet.
Charlie is also a company director of High School Productions – taking radio and media into schools to inspire young people. Charlie has also recently become a Patron of Kent Children’s University.
Away from work Charlie’s passion is dancing. Over the years Charlie has done it all – ballet, tap, jazz and street. But her real passion is irish dancing which she started age 3. Charlie has danced and competed all over the country, as well as Europe.
