Fertility hypnotherapy

Baby loss, fertility struggles and fertility treatments can all take a huge toll on mental wellbeing.

Grief, jealousy, anger, loneliness and sadness are all very normal emotions to experience and yet can feel completely overwhelming.

I know because I’ve been there and I wish I had known about hypnotherapy and psychotherapy when I was going through missed miscarriages, Asherman's syndrome and subsequent highly anxious pregnancies.

And then there are those very unhelpful things that may be said to you by friends, family and even medical professionals …

“Just relax and it will happen naturally!”

“A miscarriage means it wasn’t meant to be …”

“You can always try again …”

“My friend’s sister’s daughter’s niece got pregnant after she stopped trying IVF - maybe you should try that too?!”

Phrases that are often meant well - but can be so hurtful when you’re going through one of the toughest times of your life.

So how can hypnotherapy and psychotherapy help?

Well - I can’t guarantee that our work together will result in a pregnancy but here is what we can do:

  • Give you permission to speak openly and freely about your emotions and feelings in a safe, supportive and non judgemental space

  • Reduce stress levels which is ALWAYS  good thing, but especially when you are trying to conceive or preparing for IVF or another fertility treatment

  • Allow you the chance to gain some clarity

  • Help you work through relationships that may have become strained

  • Help you to regain a sense of control over your life

  • Set out some goals for ALL aspects of your life that may have been neglected

  • Support you through various medical procedures and the two week wait

  • Help you recapture intimacy with your partner as fertility problems and treatments can really take their toll

  • Reduce anxiety, worry and stress and improve relaxation and self esteem

  • Work with your subconscious mind to uncover any psychological and emotional blocks and work with positive suggestion and visualisations for conception and pregnancy

  • Give you calming strategies and techniques to take with you on your journey (for the rest of your life!)

Hypnotherapy allows you to strengthen (or perhaps even establish for the first time in your life) a strong mind / body connection.

Your mind and your body are already extremely connected - think about how you might blush automatically if you’re embarrassed. Or perhaps your armpits or hands begin to sweat if you’re anxious or stressed?

These connections are already strong - but through hypnosis we can make them positively strong.

Did you know that hypnosis can increase natural conception by 50%?

Hypnosis Increases Natural Conception by 50%

Infertile women utilizing mind/body techniques such as hypnosis have a 42 – 55% conception rate as compared to 20% with in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The Journal of the American Medical Women’s Association 1999 and The Journal of Fertility and Sterility 2000. (Studies conducted by Alice Domar, PhD, director of the Beth Israel Deaconess Behavioural Medicine Program for Infertility in Boston)

Hypnosis and natural conception.

Hypnosis based on imagery and a relaxation strategy was successful in facilitating pregnancy. The treatment was considered to have resulted in beneficial modification of attitude, optimism, and mind-body interaction. The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. (Volume 38, Issue 1, 1995, 22-26): Hypnosis in the Treatment of Functional Infertility.

Hypnotherapy for natural conception

Dr. Peter Quinn a a pioneer in the field of fertility, used hypnotherapy with a group of women between the ages of 26 and 42 who had durations of infertility lasting from 2-12 years. 65% of the women went on to have a successful full-term pregnancy after hypnotherapy. Dr P

Quinn and M Pawson, “Psychosomatic Infertility,” European Journal of Clinical Hypnosis Vol4, 1994.

In addition to my core hypnotherapy training I’ve undertaken additional training in hypnosis and psychotherapy for fertility with Easibirthing - course accredited by the National College for Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. There is no other training like this in the country.

The Impact of Prolonged Stress on Fertility

After prolonged stress the sympathetic nervous system can become hyper-stimulated. A hyper-stimulated nervous system sends less blood to the uterus and ovaries, thereby impairing their optimal functioning.
When we enter a state of hypnosis by directing our attention towards increasing comfort, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, giving rise to what is known as the relaxation response. While in this state there is a measurable decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, stress hormone levels and muscle tension and people experience a wonderful feeling of relaxation.
